Sending a VLA Log to NI

Use the VLA Log Wizard to generate and send a VLA Log to NI.
Launch the VLA Log Wizard from the menu item, and the wizard will walk you through the following steps to generate and send a VLA Log to NI.
Generating a VLA Log
Specify the reason and date range, as follows:
- Select the Reason for sending VLA Log. Choose from one of the following
options:
Option Reason Agreement renewal Your volume license agreement is expiring and you want to renew it. Send client information You want to update client information to grant access to NI technical support. Overdrafted with pay-as-you-go You want to enable the pay-as-you-go option and assign a license that increases the overdraft usage. Other You want to send a log for another reason. Note You can automatically send VLA logs by navigating to . - If you selected Other, enter a reason in Other reason and then enter a Date range.
- Click Next.
Specifying the Output Method
You can select one of two ways to send your VLA Log to NI:
- Send the VLA Log now
- Select Send VLA Log now to send the VLA Log to NI immediately over a secure Internet connection.
- Click Send.
- Save the VLA Log to send it later
- Select Save VLA Log to send it later manually to send the VLA Log later.
- Click Save.
- Select a location to store the file and click Save.
- Contact NI at services@ni.com to send your VLA Log to NI later.
Sending the Specified VLA Log to NI
The VLA Log wizard generates the VLA Log and either saves it to a file or sends it, depending on what you selected in the previous screen.
- Click Cancel to stop VLA Log generation and delete the partially generated VLA Log.
- Click Back to edit your choices.
Finishing the VLA Log Wizard
If you selected Send VLA Log now, Volume License Manager immediately sends the log to NI. If you selected Save VLA Log to send it later manually, you can click the link to open the log's location.
Click Finish to exit the wizard.

What is a VLA Log and How Does NI Use It?
NI VLM records into the VLA Log all instances of policy and permissions changes, including overdrafts. You send the VLA Log to NI in following scenarios:
- When your current agreement is expiring
- When your User or Computer list has changed
- When you have added overdraft permissions under the pay-as-you-go option
- When you plan to move NI VLM to another computer
NI uses the information in the VLA Log to ensure compliance with NI contractual terms. The information allows NI to determine how much, if anything, is owed on the extra licenses and maintenance for the coming agreement period. NI sends you a new agreement license file based on whether you renewed the agreement.
What Information Is Included in my VLA Log?
- The date permissions were added and removed from each User or Computer
- The date a client was disconnected or a home license was created
- The date a disconnected client was reconnected
- Check-in and check-out events
- The contents of each agreement license file
- The overdraft percentage, if overdraft is enabled
- Whether pay-as-you-go is enabled

Reporting gives you access to almost all information included in the VLA Log. You can review the reports before sending your VLA Log to NI or before asking questions about billing.

The VLA Log Wizard encrypts the VLA Log file with a private key before transfer. The wizard sends it to NI using an HTTPS connection, the Internet standard for secure data transfer.
