This section describes the overrange and/or underrange conditions, as applicable, for the PXI/PCI‑4070, PXI‑4071, and PXI‑4072.

Function Overrange1 Underrange
Function Overrange1 Underrange
DC Functions:Voltage, Current, Resistance, and Diode All ranges, except 300 V and 1 A (NI 4070/4072) or 1000 V and 3 A (NI 4071):
  • Occurs above 105% of the range.
  • Above 105%, NI-DMM returns NaN2 (except for the 100 MΩ range on the NI 4070/4072) and the IVI overrange warning.
  • For the 100 MΩ range on the NI 4070/4072, measurements between the 105 MΩ and 1.05 GΩ ranges have a typical accuracy of 5%, although NI-DMM returns the IVI overrange warning. For measurements above 1.05 GΩ, NI-DMM returns NaN2 and the IVI overrange warning instead of the reading.
300 V and 1 A ranges (NI 4070/4072) or 1000 V and 3 A ranges (NI 4071):
  • Occurs above 105% of the range.
  • Above 105%, NI-DMM returns readings (not NaN2) and the IVI overrange warning, even though the readings are not guaranteed within specifications.
Not applicable
AC Functions:Voltage and Current All ranges, except 300 V and 1 A (NI 4070/4072) or 700 V and 3 A (NI 4071):
  • Occurs above 105% of the range.
  • Above 105%, NI-DMM returns readings (not NaN2) and the IVI overrange warning, even though the readings are not guaranteed within specifications.
  • At significantly higher than 105%, NI-DMM returns a NaN2 and the IVI overrange warning.
300 V and 1 A ranges (NI 4070/4072) or 700 V and 3 A ranges (NI 4071):
  • Occurs above 105% of the range.
  • Above 105%, NI-DMM returns readings (not NaN2) and the IVI overrange warning, even though the readings are not guaranteed within specifications.
Not applicable
Frequency/Period Not applicable
  • Occurs when the signal amplitude is below 5% of the voltage range3.
  • Below 5%, NI-DMM returns –Inf and the NI-DMM underrange warning.
Capacitance (NI 4072 only)
  • Occurs above 110% of the range.
  • Above 110%, NI-DMM returns readings (non NaN2) and the IVI overrange warning, even though the readings are not guaranteed within specifications.
  • Occurs below 5% of the range, except in the 300 pF range. The 300 pF range does not have underrange.
  • Below 5%, NI-DMM returns –Inf and the NI-DMM underrange warning.
Inductance (NI 4072 only)
  • Occurs above 110% of the range.
  • Above 110%, NI-DMM returns NaN2 and the IVI overrange warning.
  • Can occur below ≤1% of range for the 10 mH, 100 mH, 1 H, and 5 H ranges when the signal is too weak for the measurement to occur.
  • In such cases, NI-DMM returns 0 H and the NI-DMM underrange warning.

1Refer to the NI IVI Driver Help at ni.com/docs for the IVI overrange warning code.

2NaN is a digital display value for a floating-point representation of "Not a Number," as defined by the IEEE standard for binary floating point arithmetic. NaN is typically the result of an undefined operation, such as log(-1).

3Frequency voltage range is a property with the same allowed values as for the AC voltage ranges. Refer to Frequency/Period and Frequency Voltage Range for more information.
