Overview

The OPC UA toolkit contains the OPC UA API that was formerly part of the LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module and the LabVIEW Real-Time Module. From the 2017 release, the OPC UA Toolkit becomes a standalone product. The DSC Module and the Real-Time Module no longer contain the OPC UA API. The OPC UA toolkit integrates secure and reliable communications in your LabVIEW applications. The OPC UA toolkit incorporates a series of features for the creation of OPC UA clients, servers, and security management. In addition to the Data Access (DA) facet of the OPC UA Specifications, the OPC UA Toolkit also adds support for the Historical Access (HA) and Alarms & Conditions (AC) facets. The OPC UA Toolkit is compatible with both Windows and NI Linux Real-Time operating systems.

NoteTo deploy standalone applications, you must use the OPC UA Runtime and activate the OPC UA Toolkit deployment license.

System Requirements

In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the LabVIEW 2021 OPC UA Toolkit has the following requirements:

  • LabVIEW 2021 (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • LabVIEW 2021 Real-Time Module (required only if you use NI Linux Real-Time targets with the OPC UA Toolkit)
  • NI CompactRIO Device Drivers October 2021 (required only if you use CompactRIO devices with the OPC UA Toolkit)

Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW 2021.

Supported Operating Systems

The OPC UA Toolkit supports the following operating systems:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2016

Note  Refer to Unsupported Windows Operating Systems for more information about support for Microsoft Windows OSes.

Note  The OPC UA Toolkit no longer supports Windows Vista/XP/7/8.x, Windows Server 2003/2008/2012, or any 32-bit Windows operating system. The OPC UA Toolkit will not install or run on an unsupported OS. You cannot deploy or distribute applications that use the OPC UA Toolkit to an unsupported OS. Additionally, after installing the OPC UA Toolkit, you cannot use any installers built on this computer with any version of LabVIEW, LabWindows™/CVI™, NI TestStand™, or Measurement Studio on an unsupported OS.

For more information about the changes to our OS support, visit https://www.ni.com/r/win32bitsupport.

You also can find the examples for the OPC UA Toolkit in the labview\examples\Data Communication\OPCUA directory.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.6.2, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.6.2 separately before you install NI software.

For more information about automating the installation of NI products, refer to Automating an Installer in the NI Package Manager manual.

Using NI Software with Microsoft Windows 10

Microsoft Windows 10 is the latest version of the Windows operating system and features significant changes compared to previous versions. Windows 10 introduces several new capabilities and also combines features from both Windows 7 and Windows 8. For more information about NI support for Windows 10, refer to NI Product Compatibility for Microsoft Windows 10.
