Transferring Files

You can transfer files from a development computer to a test station computer by using distribution media, by copying files from a local network, or by using email or FTP, depending on the location of the test station computers and available resources.
Consider the following factors when you select a transfer method:
- Capacity—Determine how large a file you need to transfer. For example, a standard CD holds approximately 650 MB, a single-layer DVD holds approximately 4700 MB, and a single-layer Blu-Ray holds approximately 25 GB. You can use the TestStand Deployment Utility to build an installer that spans multiple discs, but this technique requires an operator to manually change the discs during the installation process. Internet connections might not have strict limits, but you might incur additional charges to transfer large amounts of data through email or FTP.
- Speed—Determine the time required to transfer files. Consider the total time required to physically move the distribution media to the test station computer and read the information from the media to transfer the entire test system, which can directly affect manufacturing downtime.
