NI GPIB-Converter Software Drops Support for Windows 7 (32- and 64-Bit) and All 32-Bit Windows Operating Systems in 2021

Legal Information

Overview

The NI GPIB-Serial Converter software supports the National Instruments GPIB-RS232 and GPIB-RS485/RS422 hardware interfaces. These products are drop-in replacements for the older GPIB-232/485CT-A and GPIB-232CV-A products. There are no dip switches on the GPIB-RS232/485/422 hardware interfaces. The NI GPIB-Serial Converter software allows you to configure the settings for the hardware, as well as update the firmware, if a new firmware image becomes available.

Supported Operating Systems

The NI GPIB-Serial Converter software supports the following operating systems:

  • Windows 10/8.11/7 SP12

1 NI software installs VC2015 Runtime and .NET 4.6.2. Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 require Microsoft updates to support these items. Refer to Microsoft KB2919442 and KB2919355 for more information about how to install these updates.

2 NI software is signed with a SHA-256 certificate. Windows 7 SP1, Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1, and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 require Microsoft updates to support SHA-256. Refer to Microsoft KB3033929 for more information about how to install this security update.

Note  Refer to NI GPIB-Serial Converter Software Drops Support for Windows 7 (32- and 64-Bit) and All 32-Bit Windows Operating Systems in 2021 for information about future OS support.

Features in Version 19.0

Modes of Operation

The GPIB-RS232/485/422 combines the modes of operation from the GPIB-232/485CT-A (G Mode and S Mode) and GPIB-232CV-A (C Mode and D Mode). Refer to the NI GPIB-Serial Converter Help for additional information regarding each mode.

Firmware and Configuration Updates

Use the NI GPIB-Serial Converter Wizard to select the desired mode of operation and configure the GPIB-RS232/485/422 settings. Download firmware images from the web and use the same utility to update the hardware interfaces with the new firmware.

Serial Baud Rates

Baud rates up to 115.2 kb/s are supported. Use the NI GPIB-Serial Converter Wizard to configure this setting.

Secondary GPIB Addressing

Secondary GPIB addressing is available in any mode of operation. Use the NI GPIB-Serial Converter Wizard to configure this setting.

EOI Assertion in C Mode

In C Mode, there is an option to assert EOI with <CR> and <LF> termination modes. The EOI (End or Identity) asserts on the GPIB bus on the terminating byte prior to readdressing the device as a Talker. Use the NI GPIB-Serial Converter Wizard to configure this setting.

Differences between GPIB-RS232/485/422 and GPIB-232/485CT/CV-A

Refer to the NI GPIB-Serial Converter Help for a detailed list of differences between the GPIB-RS232/485/422 and the GPIB-232/485CT/CV-A hardware interfaces.

Enhancements and Bug Fixes in Version 19.0

Support for Windows 2000 and XP is discontinued in this release.

Supported Interfaces

The following hardware interfaces are supported:

  • GPIB-RS232
  • GPIB-RS485/RS422

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.
