Minimum System Requirements

CPU x64 compatible processors, 4 processor kernels, clock frequency 1.4 GHz
Amount of memory 8 GB

Recommended System Requirements

CPU x64 compatible processors, 8 processor kernels or more, clock frequency 2.5GHz or more
Amount of memory 16 GB or more
Hard disks for software and index 15,000 rpm SAS drives or SSD drives;
The software installation needs approximately 4 GB storage space. However, depending on the size of the DataFinder index, considerably more storage space might be necessary. National Instruments recommends you store the DataFinder index on a separate drive.

Miscellaneous

  • Internet Explorer from Version 11 with the KB3021952 security update

Supported Operating Systems

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP12
  •  Windows Server 2012 R21
  •  Windows Server 2016

With this release, DataFinder Server Edition 2017 drops support for Microsoft Windows 7 RTM (with no service pack), Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. DataFinder Server Edition 2017 and later will not install or run on an unsupported OS. You cannot deploy or distribute applications that use DataFinder Server Edition 2017 to an unsupported OS. Additionally, after installing DataFinder Server Edition, you cannot use any installers built on this computer with any version of LabVIEW, LabWindows™/CVI™, NI TestStand™, or Measurement Studio on an unsupported OS.

1 NI software installs VC2015 runtime and .NET 4.6.2. Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, require Microsoft updates to support these items. Refer to Microsoft KB2919442 and KB2919355 for more information about how to install these updates.

2 NI software is signed with an SHA-256 certificate. Windows 7 SP1, Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1, and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 require Microsoft updates to suport SHA-256. Refer to Microsoft KB3033929 for more infromation about how to install this security update.

Note  DataFinder Server Edition, LabVIEW DataFinder Toolkit, and DIAdem Version 10.0 and later versions install and use a common software component (DataFinder client), which is refreshed through the installation of DataFinder Server Edition. When you uninstall DataFinder Server Edition, the current version of the shared component remains. This is intentional and has been tested extensively.
DataFinder Server Edition 1.0, LabVIEW DataFinder Toolkit 2009, DIAdem 9.0, LabWindows/CVI 8.1, and LabVIEW 7.1 and later versions install and use a common software component (USI), which is refreshed through the installation of DataFinder Server Edition. When you uninstall DataFinder Server Edition, the current version of the shared component remains. This is intentional and has been tested extensively.

TDM Server 2017 Clients

Some of the new features and improvements of DataFinder Server Edition and Analysis Server can only be used with the respective National Instruments client software products.

National Instruments recommends the use of the following products for the implementation of DataFinder Server Edition 2017:

Corrected Errors and Incompatibilities

The following section lists some of the issues fixed in DataFinder Server Edition. This is not an exhaustive list of issues fixed in the current version. If you have a CAR ID, you can search this list to validate that the issue has been fixed.

Fixed Issues in DataFinder Server Edition 2017

CAR ID Description
560139 When writing TDMS files in a search area of the DataFinder, LabVIEW sometimes creates invalid TDMS files.
608813 DataFinder Server Edition cannot be configured after a Windows update.
618685 When indexing, the DataFinder ignores additional filename extension of C++ DataPlugins.

Incompatibilities of DataFinder Server Edition Version 2017 with Previous Versions

To find information on the compatibility of earlier versions refer to ni.com/support under the search term "DataFinder Server Edition Release Notes".

  • You can no longer run a DataFinder under a specific user account. Instead, each DataFinder runs under the same TDM server user account.
  • The TDM Server Control Panel application and the TDM Server Manager WebUI replace the earlier DataFinder Manager. You cannot start the TDM Server Control Panel application without admin permissions.
  • Data indexing will also continue if the computer is used interactively.
  • DataFinder instances are automatically registered on the computer hosting the server. Creating a DataFinder leads to automatic registration on the server machine.
  • You can no longer create DataFinder instances without Remote Access. Remote Access is automatically activated if a DataFinder is upgraded to version 2017.
  • Tray icons for running DataFinder instances are no longer available. Use the TDM Server Manager instead to monitor the running status of an instance.
  • For DataPlugin updates, DataFinder now executes a rolling update instead of invalidating all affected files immediately. This leads to an overall better system performance, but let files indexed by the previous DataPlugin version remain in the index until the rolling update has finished.
  • ATFX_TDM DataPlugin now uses the tilde character "~" as the attribute hierarchy delimiter instead of underscore "_".
  • All DataFinder Server instances are started automatically on computer start. You no longer need a configuration as Windows service or Windows autostart.
  • When you configure search areas in the DataFinder, you must specify UNC paths. Mapped disk drives are no longer supported.
  • If the TDM Server is active, you cannot execute scripts from previous versions. Use the StopTDMServer method to stop the TDM Server.

Known Issues

  • You cannot use the DataFinder with a Microsoft SQL adaptor if the DataFinder is running on a computer with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, or an earlier version. Install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 to solve this error. Microsoft describes this problem on the Microsoft website in the KnowledgeBase entry 2640696. A hotfix for this issue is on the Microsoft website in the KnowledgeBase entry 983246.
  • To ensure that the backup of a DataFinder or a Preprocessor was successful, check manually whether the backup file is in the backup folder.
  • The Server Manager does not display the correct status when a backup of a DataFinder Server or of a Data Preprocessor is created. Press the F5 key to refresh the status.
  • If you stop the Analysis Server and specify that the processing of open tasks is to be continued, the overview displays the current tasks as 'Canceled' after the Analysis Server restarts, even if these tasks are still being processed.
  • Analysis Server does not list processed data in the "Current and Completed Tasks" area if you are using an ASAM data source.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer dialog boxes.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.6.2, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.6.2 separately before you install NI software.
