Overview

The LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite provides VIs that you can use to create applications that measure, analyze, monitor, and record electrical power data and phenomena. Use the Power Measurement VIs to measure electrical power parameters and to perform harmonic analysis on the CompactRIO platform, the CompactDAQ system, and the NI PXI platform. Use the Power Quality VIs to perform power quality measurement on the CompactRIO platform, the CompactDAQ system, and the NI PXI platform. Use the Synchrophasor VIs to perform synchrophasor measurement and use the Protection VIs to implement protection devices on the CompactRIO platform.

The Electrical Power Suite complies with the following standards:

  • IEC 61000-4-7:2009, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 4-7: Testing and Measurement Techniques - General Guide on Harmonics and Interharmonics Measurements and Instrumentation, for Power Supply Systems and Equipment Connected Thereto
  • IEC 61000-4-15:2010, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 4-15: Testing and Measurement Techniques - Flickermeter - Functional and Design Specifications
  • IEC 61000-4-30:2008, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Part 4-30: Testing and Measurement Techniques - Power Quality Measurement Methods
  • IEEE Std C37.111-1999, IEEE Standard Common Format for Transient Data Exchange (COMTRADE) for Power Systems
  • IEEE Std C37.118.1-2011, IEEE Standard for Synchrophasor Measurements for Power Systems
  • IEEE Std C37.118.1a-2014, IEEE Standard for Synchrophasor Measurements for Power Systems
Amendment 1: Modification of Selected Performance Requirements
  • IEEE Std C37.118.2-2011, IEEE Standard for Synchrophasor Data Transfer for Power Systems
  • EN 50160:2007, Voltage Characteristics of Electricity Supplied by Public Distribution Networks
  • NEMA MG 1-2014, Motors and Generators

System Requirements

In addition to the system requirements for the LabVIEW Development System, the Electrical Power Suite 2015 has the following requirements:

  • LabVIEW 2015 Full or Professional Development System (32-bit)
  • LabVIEW 2015 FPGA Module
  • LabVIEW 2015 Real-Time Module
  • NI-RIO 15.0
  • NI-DAQmx 15.0 (required only if you use National Instruments DAQ devices with the Electrical Power Suite)
  • At least 200 MB of disk space

Refer to the LabVIEW Readme for additional system requirements and supported operating systems for LabVIEW 2015.

Installation Instructions

Double-click the setup.exe file in the root directory of the Electrical Power Suite installer and follow the instructions on the screen to install the Electrical Power Suite.

Product Security and Critical Updates

New Features and Changes

The Electrical Power Suite 2015 includes the following new features and changes:

  • Motor VIs—Use the VIs located on the Motor palette to conduct condition monitoring on AC induction motors, such as estimating motor speed, torque, load, and efficiency, calculating the motor spectra and rotor bar sideband harmonics, detecting broken rotor bars, and measuring the NEMA unbalance status and the derating rate.
  • Power Quality VIs that Support Measuring the Single-Bus Multiple-Line and Multiple-Bus Systems—Use the VIs located on the Power Quality palette to measure the power quality of single-bus multiple-line or multiple-bus systems.
  • Motor Measurement Example—Use the Motor Monitoring.lvproj example to learn how to monitor AC induction motors.
  • Power Quality Measurement Example—Use the Multiple Line Power Quality Applications (cRIO) (Delta-Sigma).lvproj example to learn how to measure the power quality in single-bus multiple-line or multiple-bus systems using applications on the CompactRIO targets.

Known Issues

You can access the software and documentation known issues list online. Refer to the National Instruments website for an up-to-date list of known issues in the Electrical Power Suite.

Accessing the Help

Refer to the LabVIEW Help, accessible from Help»LabVIEW Help in LabVIEW, for information about the Electrical Power Suite.

Finding Examples

Select Help»Find Examples from LabVIEW to launch the NI Example Finder. Navigate to the Toolkits and Modules»Electrical Power folder to access the examples. You can modify an example VI to fit an application, or you can copy and paste from one or more examples into a VI that you create.

You also can find the examples for the Electrical Power Suite in the labview\examples\Electrical Power directory.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.

For more information about automating the installation of NI products, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:

How to Use NI Software with Microsoft Windows 8.x

When you install National Instruments software on Microsoft Windows 8.x, you will notice a few additional tiles in the Apps view, including shortcuts to NI application software products such as NI LabVIEW, Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX), and NI Launcher.

Using NI Launcher

NI Launcher helps you find and launch installed NI products. It provides you with a method of finding NI products similar to the Start menu in previous versions of Microsoft Windows. To use NI Launcher, click the NI Launcher tile in the Apps view. NI Launcher launches the desktop and opens a menu containing a list of NI products. Click any NI product to launch it.

Note  NI MAX does not appear as a desktop shortcut when installed on Microsoft Windows 8.x. You can launch NI MAX either from the Apps view or from within NI Launcher.

Pinning Frequently Used Applications

For convenience, you can pin your most-used NI applications, such as MAX, to either the Start screen or the Taskbar on the desktop, as necessary:

Current ApplicationIcon LocationPin to Action
Windows 8.x DesktopDesktop TaskbarRight-click application and select Pin to Taskbar
Windows 8.x Desktop Start screenRight-click application and select Pin to Start
Windows 8.x Start screenDesktop TaskbarRight-click application and select Pin to taskbar from the menu bar on the bottom of the screen

Finding All Programs

If you want to find a particular application or related files, such as documentation files, from the Start screen, you can access all installed files from the Apps view. To get to the Apps view, right-click anywhere on the Start screen and select All apps (Windows 8.0) or click the down arrow on the bottom left of the screen (Windows 8.1).
