This page explains the variations of PXI Chassis to PXI Controller compatibility, including known exceptions.
Most NI PXI Express controllers, including remote, embedded, and rack-mount controllers, are compatible with any NI PXI Express chassis. Exceptions are explained below:
PXI Controller to PXI Chassis Compatibility: All NI PXI form factor PXI Controllers are compatible with all NI PXI chassis, although bandwidth limitations of older controllers should be taken into account. The maximum bandwidth for PXI chassis is 132 MB/s. If more bandwidth is required, consider upgrading to PXI Express.
PXI Express Controllers to PXI Chassis Compatibility: PXI Express and PXI use different bus architectures. A PXI Express controller will not fit into a PXI chassis nor will a PXI controller fit into a PXI Express chassis. If you have the wrong chassis and controller combination, the chassis will not power on.
Note: This limitation does not necessarily apply to PXI peripheral modules. Most NI PXI modules are hybrid-slot compatible PXI-1 cards and are designed to work in the hybrid slots of a PXI Express chassis. Consult the peripheral module's product manual to confirm whether it is hybrid-slot compatible.
PXI Platform Services is required to identify NI PXI and PXI Express chassis and modules, as well as to allow for trigger routing. Confirm that a version of PXI Platform services compatible with your chassis will also support your operating system.
