The procedure used to place resistors, inductors or capacitors is similar to the procedure used to place other types of components. However, there are some differences.

When placing any RLC components, you can choose any combination of the component's value (for example, resistance), type (for example, carbon film), tolerance, package and manufacturer.

If you are placing a component that will be exported to PCB layout, and become part of a Bill of Materials, you must be careful that the combination of values that you select in the Select a Component dialog box are available in a real-world, purchaseable component.

Complete the following steps to place an R, L or C component:

  1. Click on the Basic group in the Components toolbar.

The Select a Component dialog box appears with the Basic component group displayed.

    Or

Choose Place»Component to display the Select a Component dialog box, and select the Basic group from the Group drop-down list.

    Or

Right-click in the workspace, select Place Component from the context menu that appears and select the Basic group from the Group drop-down list.

  2. Select the Master Database in the Database drop-down list.
  3. Select one of RESISTOR, CAPACITOR, INDUCTOR, CAP_ELECTROLIT, VARIABLE_RESISTOR, VARIABLE_CAPACITOR, VARIABLE_INDUCTOR or POTENTIOMETER in the Family list.
  4. Type the value of the component that you want to place in the field at the top of the Component list.

You may type any value—it does not need to appear in the Component list to be placed on the schematic.

  5. Select the desired Component type.

If you do not see the desired type in the drop-down list, you may type it manually.

  6. Select the desired Tolerance(%). If you do not see the desired tolerance in the drop-down list, you may type it manually.

This list does not appear for potentiometers, variable resistors, variable inductors, or variable capacitors.

  7. Selected the desired package in the Package manufacturer/type list.

If you are placing a component for simulation only, select <no package>. If you intend to export the schematic to PCB layout, select a value in this list.

The Hyperlink field is intended to contain an internet address, for example, the component manufacturer's website. The contents of this field can be edited in the Components tab of the Database Manager. To go to the link, hover the cursor over it, hold down <Ctrl> and click.

  8. Click OK.

The browser closes and the cursor changes to a ghost image of the component.

  9. Click on the workspace where you want the component placed.

You can use the Database Manager to add new RLC components.

You can also create resistors, inductors or capacitors using Multisim's Component Wizard. However, RLC components created in this way only contain basic simulation model information. Those that are placed from the Master Database as described in this procedure have additional SPICE simulation parameters that can be viewed from the Value tab of the placed component's properties dialog box. When you are placing components that were created using the Component Wizard, you must select them from either the Corporate or User Database.
