Create a DUT type first, then create a DUT.

Creating a DUT Type

Create a DUT type to create a DUT template. Creating a DUT template allows you to easily configure individual DUTs for a test.

Introduced in PAtools 2025 Q2

Complete the following steps to create a DUT type:

  1. In the PAconfigurator Navigation area, click Devices Under Test.
  2. Select the DUT Types tab.
  3. In the list area of the DUT Types tab, click New Device Under Test Type.
  4. Enter a Name for the DUT type.
  5. In the DUT Input Parameters area, click one of the following options to add input parameters.
    OptionDescription
Add Variable Input Parameter Configure the following settings if you choose to add variable input parameters:
    • Defined Variable—The variable as defined in Development » Device Under Test Type Library » Name of the DUT Type.
    • Display Name—The name of the input parameter.
    • Default Value—The default value of the variable.
    • Configuration Rule—The rule that determines the minimum and maximum values for the parameter. Alternatively, you can choose from the entries of a user-defined Selection List.
Add Table Input Parameter Configure the following settings if you choose to add a table for input parameters:
    1. Defined Table—The name of the table or step table.
    2. Display Name—The name of the table input parameter.
    3. Table Type—The table type or step table type.

Add input parameters for each DUT variable required for your template. Each DUT based on this DUT type inherits the DUT Input Parameters. Tests use DUT Input Parameters values when you configure a DUT instance using this DUT type.

  6. In the Test Input Parameters area, click Add Variable Input Parameter for each variable that you want to configure when creating a test.

Each DUT based on this DUT type inherits the Test Input Parameters. Test Input Parameter values are configurable when creating a test. The test uses the configured values when the test executes.

For Test Input Parameters, the same settings are available for configuration as in DUT Input Parameters.

  7. Click Save.
The Device Under Test Type summary page appears in PAconfigurator. The summary page displays the configured parameters for the new DUT type.

Creating a DUT

Before configuring a DUT, you must create a DUT type. Refer to Creating a DUT Type for more information.

To create a DUT, complete the following steps:

Note You can also duplicate a DUT from the Context menu.
  1. In the PAconfigurator Navigation area, click Devices Under Test.
  2. Select the Devices Under Test tab.
  3. In the list area of the Devices Under Test tab, click New Device Under Test.
  4. In the New Device Under Test tab, configure the following settings:
    1. Enter a Name for the DUT.
    2. Select a Device Under Test Type and write a description for the DUT.
    3. Enter a Part Number for the DUT.
Note You cannot change the part number after you save the DUT. If you upload this DUT to SystemLink, this part number is the part number of the SystemLink product. The PAtools DUT part number must match the part number of the SystemLink product.
    4. In DUT Input Parameters, define each input parameter.
The input parameters available for configuration in the DUT Input Parameters dialog depend on the DUT type that you select.
      • If you added a variable input parameter, enter a Value for each input parameter.
      • If you added a Table table type, enter values in the table for each input parameter. If your configuration includes fixed rows, you cannot add or remove table rows. Otherwise, you can add or remove table rows.
      • If you added a Step Table table type, enter values in the step table for each input parameter. You can add or remove table rows.
    5. In the Test Input Parameters field, enter a Default Value for each input parameter.

The input parameters available for configuration in the Test Input Parameters dialog depend on the DUT type that you select. All variables except Default Value are read-only. You cannot delete input parameters from the list. However, you can add input parameters by clicking Add Variable Input Parameter.

If you add input parameters, configure the following settings:
      • The Defined Variable as defined in Development » Device Under Test Type Library » Name of the DUT Type or in Development » Device Under Test Library.
      • The Display Name that you see when creating a test.
      • The Default Value of the variable.
      • The Configuration Rule that determines the minimum and maximum values for the parameter. Alternatively, you can choose from the entries of a user-defined Selection List.
  5. Click Save.
The Device Under Test summary page appears in PAconfigurator. The summary page displays the configured parameters for the new DUT.

Versioning DUTs

Create a version of an existing DUT to upload the DUT to SystemLink and improve the traceability of changes to DUT input parameters.

Introduced in PAtools 2025 Q2

When creating a version of a DUT, the current state of the DUT is copied to a new version. All content in the DUT, including input parameters, is captured and made read-only. You cannot make changes to the versioned copy of the DUT.
  1. Open the Devices Under Tests tab.
  2. Select the DUT that you want to version from the list.
The summary page for the DUT appears in a new tab.
  3. Click Create Version.
  4. Enter a Description.
  5. Click Create.
The summary page of the DUT displays an entry for the new version in the Versions section.

Access the content folder for the versioned DUT in the Development area Device_under_Test_Library. The content folder for the versioned DUT is copied and stored in the same folder as the original DUT. The versioned folder includes the version number at the end of the folder name (for example, <DUTNAME>_1). All links and references in the versioned folder are copies of the original.

When building a test with the Test Wizard, you can select a specific version of a DUT. You can also configure the values of the contained input parameters.

Deleting Versioned DUTs

Delete a version of a DUT from the summary page of the DUT.

  1. Open the Devices Under Test tab.
  2. Select a DUT.
Selecting a DUT opens the summary page of the DUT.
  3. In the Versions section, click the trash icon for the version that you want to delete.
You can delete a version of a DUT that you uploaded to SystemLink. In this case, a window appears with a reminder that the version is linked to SystemLink. Confirm that you want to proceed with the deletion.

Uploading a DUT Type or DUT to SystemLink

You can upload a DUT type or DUT to SystemLink.

Note A PAtools DUT is equivalent to a SystemLink product.
Note A PAtools DUT Type is equivalent to a SystemLink product family.

The SystemLink product or product family is added to the SystemLink workspace, as defined in Administration » SystemLink Configuration. In SystemLink Configuration, you can enable or disable the ability to upload a DUT type or DUT to SystemLink. Refer to Configuring PAtools to Interact with SystemLink for more information.

Complete the following steps to upload a DUT type or DUT to SystemLink as a product:

  1. Open the DUT Types tab or Devices Under Test tab in PAtools.
  2. Open the DUT type or DUT you want to upload.
  3. Click Upload to SystemLink and configure the following settings:
The upload process starts immediately for DUT types. For DUTs, complete the following additional steps:
    1. Enter a Name for the SystemLink product.
    2. Select a Device Under Test Version.
Note The Part number field automatically populates with the part number that you assigned to the DUT during the initial configuration.
    3. Click OK.

When you upload a DUT type, PAtools creates a connection in SystemLink that associates the DUT type with a SystemLink product family. Create a product in SystemLink using the PAtools DUT type name for the product family. Using the DUT type name for the product family associates the SystemLink product with the PAtools DUT type.

The first time you upload a DUT, PAtools creates a SystemLink product. PAtools then creates an association between the SystemLink product and the PAtools DUT. For subsequent uploads, PAtools updates the associated SystemLink product or creates a product if the associated SystemLink product is deleted. The PAtools DUT type and the part number are set as the SystemLink product family and part number, respectively.

In SystemLink, custom fields display the DUT Input Parameters in a SystemLink product created from a PAtools DUT or DUT type. Other custom fields display the Test Input Parameters in a test plan that uses the DUT or DUT type.
