Although you can replace a package or change its pin mapping in both Multisim and Ultiboard, we strongly recommend that these actions be done in Multisim.

Multisim contains the schematic symbol, associated package and the symbol-to-package mappings.

In Ultiboard, there is no data indicating what schematic capture components are mapped to a given package. There are many schematic capture components that map to a relatively small number of packages, and each of the mappings will be unique to that component.

  Footprint changes in Ultiboard do not update the symbol-to-package mappings. Therefore, for anything but the most simple footprint changes, the likely outcome is a broken board.

If you change a footprint in Ultiboard and backward annotate, Multisim disconnects and reconnects all the nets on that component. A Difference of this type is combined into one row and called Package. If you select Separate package change from associated net connections for this Difference, you will see a disconnect (remove) and reconnect (add) for each pin in the component. A conflict occurs if you ignore the footprint change and do not ignore all the related “pin-on-net” differences. A conflict also occurs if you do not ignore the package change, but try to ignore one of the disconnections.
