You can configure alarming for network-published shared variables only. Enable network publishing for a shared variable before you configure alarming for this shared variable. Complete the following steps to configure alarms for string and custom shared variables:

  1. Right-click a string or custom shared variable in the Project Explorer window and select Properties from the shortcut menu to display the Shared Variable Properties dialog box.
  2. Select Alarming to display the Alarming page.
  3. Place a checkmark in the Enable Alarming checkbox.
  4. In the Alarms section, place a checkmark in the appropriate cell of the Enabled column.
  5. In the appropriate cell of Name column, enter the name of the alarm.
  6. In the appropriate cell of the Priority column, enter a priority for the alarm. The priority level can be 1–1,000, where 1,000 is the highest priority.
  7. In the appropriate cell of the Ack Type column, select an acknowledgement type.
  8. In the appropriate cell of the Area column, enter a name for the area to which the alarm belongs.
  9. In the appropriate cell of the Description column, enter a description of the alarm.
  10. In the appropriate cell of the Log? column, place a checkmark to log alarm information to the database.
  11. Optional: Place a checkmark in the Generate event on value change checkbox to generate events when the values of shared variables change.
  12. Click the OK button to close the Shared Variable Properties dialog box.
