Research 6G Technologies with Wideband RF Record and Playback Systems

The vision for 6G is being defined, based on technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), terahertz bands, and MIMO. Demonstrating these is complex; researchers often spend significant time building testbed infrastructure rather than focusing on research. They need flexibility to adapt to emerging requirements, AI for cognitive capability, and software frameworks to rapidly gather real data. The system setup must have:

  • Customizable, high-performance hardware and software architecture for real-time prototyping to go beyond simulation
  • Lossless RF data collection and transmission capability to gain comprehensive understanding of real-world behavior and support AI/ML research
  • Support for higher bandwidth, expansion to higher frequencies and synchronization

LabVIEW Reference Design for Prototyping Wireless Systems

  • The Ettus USRP X410 provides four Tx and four Rx channels with a 1 MHz to 7.2 GHz frequency range, a bandwidth of 400 MHz, and 10 Gbe/100 Gbe ports for high-throughput streaming.
  • Options are available to extend the frequency range to address FR2 5G bands (24 GHz – 44 GHz).
  • The PXIe-1092 chassis and PXIe-8881 controller allow aggregation and processing of large amounts of data, with RAID drive options for storing the data.
  • The LabVIEW Reference design provides out-of-the-box streaming functionality for FR1 and FR2 bands.
  • Reference design documentation is provided, accelerating the system-level getting started process for a RF record and playback system.
