Administrator Notes

The following notes address computer and network administrators.

When you install and run DIAdem for the first time, registry entries are required in the following areas:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_USERS

Make sure that these areas in the registry are not write-protected when you launch DIAdem for the first time, or launch DIAdem with administrator access rights.

Refer to the Help page DIAdem Entries in the Windows Registry for further information about registry entries.

Registering Components:

Every time you start DIAdem, required components (ActiveX components, ATL-COM objects) are reregistered in order to avoid version conflicts. You can influence this behavior if you generate and set a new variable in the Windows registry file.

The path in the registration file is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/National Instruments/DIAdem/x.xx

The version number (x.xx) depends on which DIAdem version you are using (for example, 10.10).

You can insert a new DWORD value called RegWriteAccessAllow below this key. If you set the value as 0, the components are not registered. If you set the value as 1, or if the value does not exist, the components are registered.

If the necessary components are not registered, or if the components that have been registered are not the ones required, they behave unpredictably.

If you do not have the required access rights to register components, proceed as follows:

A user with the required access rights, for example the administrator, starts DIAdem. This registers the components. The administrator then sets the value RegWriteAccessAllow to 0.

Users that do not have the registration rights can now use the components.

When installing DIAdem on a network, refer to the page Operating DIAdem on a PC Network.

NoteYou must have full access rights for folders that DIAdem writes to, especially read, create, and delete rights.

Preventing the Addition of Network Drives and Preventing Shared Folders Being Used as Search Areas in My DataFinder

To prevent the addition of network drives and shared folders as search areas in My DataFinder, assign the value 1 (DWORD) to the variable disableNetDrives in the registry file under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\National Instruments\Common\DataFinderDesktop.

Additional Information on Network Operation

To use DIAdem at several workstations, you must install DIAdem separately at each workstation. You can manage the licenses on a central license server. Start the NI license manager by clicking Start»Programs»National Instruments»NI License Manager. You will find assistance there.

Do not install DIAdem on a network drive, because you then must ensure that the DIAdem folder is read-only for ALL users on the network. Otherwise, DIAdem would create temporary files that can cause problems for other users. Do not start the Help with write-rights on the network computer. If, however, temporary files have been generated (*.gid;*.fts;*.ftg, *.001, *.~x~), you must delete them, because some of them contain absolute path entries.

DIAdem PDF Export

If you delete the DIAdem PDF Export printer, start DIAdemStart.Exe on the DIAdem program path as Administrator in order to reconfigure the printer.

Note The DIAdem uninstall program does not delete the DIAdem PDF Export printer.

User-Defined DIAdem Configuration

Use the DIAdem desktop file to save basic settings and to enable these settings when DIAdem launches. The desktop file has the extension ddd. You also can use environment variables in the desktop file where there are paths or program names. This includes areas between Begin_GPI-Extension and End_GPI-Extension, or between Begin_Paths and End_Paths, or areas that contain .exe. DIAdem interprets the environment variables when it reads the desktop file and overwrites the variables with the variable value when it saves the desktop file. The following example shows a valid syntax in the desktop file for the environment variable DIAdemPath:

Begin_Paths
 Library: '%DIAdemPath%\libr\data\';
End_Paths;
