Configure each client machine to point to a volume license server.

If NI software is not installed, run a Volume License Installer on the client machine and complete any dialog boxes. No additional setup is necessary.

If a client machine has already installed the appropriate NI software, configure the machine to point to a volume license server automatically or manually.

Configuring Client Machines Automatically

If a client machine already has the appropriate NI software installed, you can configure it to point to a volume license server automatically using the NI VLM Client application. This application obtains and submits to NI VLM the client's name and other information, points the client machine to the volume license server, requests permissions, and stores administrator information on the client machine.

To automatically configure a client machine to point to NI VLM, have the client complete the following steps to run the NI VLM Client application (vlmclient.exe) from a Volume License Installer.

Note These instructions must be completed on each client machine.
  1. Using an existing Volume License Installer, navigate to the Volume License Installer Destination Directory\Installer Name\Client directory. For example, if the destination directory name is Installers and the installer directory name is LabVIEW 9.0, open Installers\LabVIEW 9.0\Client\.
  2. Launch vlmclient.exe to send a permission request to the volume license server.
  3. In the dialog boxes that follow, enter any requested information and select any desired groups.
  4. Click Finish.

Configuring Client Machines Manually

If a client machine already has the appropriate NI software installed, you can manually configure it to point to a volume license server.

Note Manually configuring a client machine does not add any NI VLM administrator information to the client machine and does not send any client information or permission requests to the volume license server.

To manually configure a client machine to point to NI VLM, have the client complete the following steps.

Note These instructions must be completed on client machines.
  1. Launch NI License Manager.
  2. Select the Options » Preferences menu item.
  3. Check the Use Network License Servers checkbox.
  4. Enter the names of the volume license servers, separated by commas, on which your NI products should check for licenses. You can enter either a simple server name, a fully qualified domain name, or the server's IP address. You can also configure your products to look at a specific port on a volume license server, the Main Licensing Port. Enter the volume license server name followed by colon and the Main Licensing Port: server[:port]. For example, the following are all legal server names:serverserver:27000server.domain.com:28432127.0.0.2 When no Main Licensing Port is specified, 27000 is implied. Main Licensing Ports range from 1-64000, inclusive.
  5. Click OK to exit the Preferences dialog box.
