Deciding Whether to Automate Tests

Testing manually

If you plan to monitor your NI VMS measurements closely from configuration until the final analysis of results, iterating on your configuration to adjust it to your measurement needs, you can configure and run NI VMS measurements manually using the standalone version of NI VMS.

Automating tests

If you plan to run several NI VMS measurements and specify pass/fail limits for them (measurements with pass/fail limits are referred to as tests), and especially if you plan to run existing configurations that require less interaction, you can save time and reduce repetition by automating tests using TestStand. For example, you want to measure several test signals and/or test elements in a test matrix, you can set up a TestStand step for each test signal and then run them in sequence. When automating tests, you can define new configurations using VIs in LabVIEW, load existing configurations within TestStand, or create new configurations using the NI VMS Analyzer Setup panel within TestStand.
