Masking
Masking describes the phenomenon in which a sound becomes imperceptible due to the presence of another sound, such as loud music masking the sound of emergency sirens or background noise partially masking conversational speech.
The transition between an unmasked tone and a completely masked tone is continuous. The masked threshold is the sound pressure level of a barely-audible test tone in the presence of a masking sound.
