Remote Inhibit, Voltage/Fault Monitoring, and Remote System Monitoring on PXI Chassis

Overview

This article shows which PXI Chassis can support Remote Inhibit, Voltage/Fault Monitoring, and Remote System Monitoring. This information is helpful if you want to control the chassis power supply remotely without using the switch on the chassis front panel or to locally/remotely monitor the power supply voltage.

Fault Monitoring is only supported by the PXIe-1066DC and PXIe-1086 chassis while local Voltage Monitoring is only supported by the remaining models in the left column.

The Remote Inhibit and Voltage/Fault Monitoring features are accessed in different locations on different chassis. For the PXIe-1066DC and PXIe-1086 chassis Remote Inhibit and Voltage/Fault Monitoring can be accessed through a 4-pin female connector on the front of the chassis. For the PXIe-1085 these are accessed with an 8-pin female connector on the back. For all other chassis these are accessed with a DB-9 connector on the back of the chassis.

In all cases, the Remote Inhibit functionality is achieved by shorting the Inhibit (Active Low) and Logic Ground pins from the connector. Remote Inhibit is enabled by default in PXI chassis and can be enabled in PXIe chassis by placing the Inhibit Mode Selector Switch in the Manual position.

Local Voltage Monitoring can be done using the DB-9 or 8-pin connector where applicable. This can allow the use of a digital voltmeter to ensure all voltage levels in the chassis are within the allowable limits. The PXIe-1066DC and PXIe-1086 do not allow local voltage monitoring; these two models have a Remote Fault (active high) pin that is asserted high when any chassis fault is detected.

The PXIe-1066DC and PXIe-1086 however, have power supply status LEDs in the front and allow Remote System Monitoring to verify the chassis health through network.
