What is the difference between Vista x86 and x64?

Vista x86 refers to the 32-bit version of the operating system, which can run on either 32-bit or 64-bit hardware.  This version of the operating system, like XP x86, provides access to 32-bit addresses and cannot take  advantage of larger, 64-bit hardware or data busses.  Vista x86 cannot run 64-bit versions of drivers or software.

Vista x64 can only be installed on 64-bit hardware.  This version of the operating system allows software to use 64-bit addresses; therefore providing access to much larger memory spaces and allowing a larger amount of information to be passed on the system's bus.  All applications and drivers must be 64-bit to run, with the exception of 32-bit software that can run within an emulation layer.

Can I run 32-bit applications on Vista x64?

Windows Vista x64 provides an emulation layer referred to as Windows on Windows (WOW) in order to enable users to run 32-bit applications.  This emulation is not available for drivers.
