1. Application Areas

SM Instruments focuses their efforts on the following areas:

  1. Sound Visualization
  2. Aerospace Acoustic Testing Facility
  3. Factory Testing Automation
  4. Network Monitoring
  5. Sensors

Noise Mapping continues to be a primary application area for their systems.  They leverage National Instruments products to provide users with a complete Noise Mapping solution.  Some examples of their solutions are shown in the following section.

2. Architecture

SM Instruments has provided a number of Noise Mapping solutions for different applications areas.  For example, SM Instruments used a 48 channel microphone array shown in the picture below to acquire the noise generated by a train passing by.  The sensor data from this array of microphones was acquired using National Instruments Dynamic Signal Acquisition Hardware.

Then, using LabVIEW Software, they were able to perform FFTs and use noise mapping algorithms to determine the locations and frequencies of noise. 

The final result of this analysis is an overlay of the sound intensity plot over the train image.  This allows the user to accurately tell the true causes of noise.  This is shown in the picture below.
