The QNET Energy Conversion board provides an experimental platform to introduce fundamental concepts of power electronics and energy conversion. Students can explore electronic and electromechanical components on the board, and learn how to use them in order to convert and condition power for various applications. The board is designed exclusively for NI ELVIS platform, taking the full advantage of accurate timing and control of FPGA-based reconfigurable I/O, brought by the new ELVIS RIO Control Module.

Included Course Labs

AC POWER

Students learn fundamental knowledge about generator physics, 3-phase power generation, and transformers. Integration with LabVIEW allows students to modify AC power signals and gain instantaneous feedback to gain insight into how generators and transformers work.

RECTIFICATION

Students learn fundamental knowledge about rectification of an AC signal. Integration with LabVIEW allows students to modify rectifier characteristics to understand how each component contributes to the smooth transformation from AC to DC.

POWER INVERTERS

This lab provides knowledge about different circuit configurations to invert a direct current signal as well as their respective outputs. Students explore how different methods of controlling the inversion affect the signal. Students use the knowledge gained to design the controlling of an inverter.

SWITCHED MODE POWER SUPPLIES

This lab teaches students about using switched mode power supplies to control the flow of current. Students learn about different configurations of SMPS and experiment with buck converters and boost converters.

CLOSED-LOOP SMPS CONTROL

This lab allows students to experiment with controlling boost and buck converters in a closed-loop. Students learn about PWM generation and PID control systems as it relates to controlling SMPS.

POWER SYSTEM INTEGRATION

This lab teaches students about different power system designs, calling upon the power conversion methods discussed in the previous labs. Students learn real-world applications of energy conversion and about efficient power transfer.
