Overview

The following document outlines National Instruments minimum software version support for Windows 7. The included tables list available software, drivers, add-ons, and toolkits and the minimum version required to operate each on Windows 7 x86 (32-bit) and Windows 7 x64 (64-bit).

What is the difference between Windows 7 x86 and x64?

Windows 7 x86 refers to the Windows 32-bit architecture and can run on either 32-bit or 64-bit hardware. Similar to Windows XP x86, Windows 7 x86 provides access only to 32-bit addresses for hardware access. As a result, even though this version of Windows 7 can work on 64-bit hardware, it is incapable of using the advantages that 64-bit hardware provides. Windows 7 x86 cannot run 64-bit versions of drivers or software designed to run natively on 64-bit operating systems.

Windows 7 x64 can be installed only on 64-bit hardware. This version of the operating system allows software to use 64-bit addresses to access hardware and can therefore access much larger memory spaces.  In order to run successfully on Windows 7 x64, all drivers must have native 64-bit support.  All 32-bit software applications can run within a Windows 7 x64 emulation layer.

For more detailed information on the difference between Windows 32-bit and 64-bit, see Using National Instruments Products with Windows 32-bit and 64-bit.

Software

The following National Instruments Software Packages are compatible with the listed versions of Windows 7 32-bit (x86) and Windows 7 64-bit (x64). As of 2011, all new versions of National Instruments will have their compatibility with Windows 7 64-bit and 64-bit LabVIEW listed in their Readme files. If there is any question about the compatibility of a piece of software with the 64-bit versions of Windows and LabVIEW, please refer to the Readme for that release.

Note: In the table below, the last column indicates the first version of 32-bit software will run within the 32-bit emulation layer of 64-bit Windows 7, Windows on Windows (WOW64).

1 The Xilinx tools used by the FPGA Module do not officially support Windows 7. National Instruments tested the Xilinx tools, as they are used by the FPGA Module, and did not find any issues related to Windows 7. If you encounter problems with the Xilinx tools specific to Windows 7, you might be required to compile using Windows XP or Windows Vista. National Instruments will not be liable for any problems or issues related to the use of Xilinx tools with Windows 7.

upgrade 2009 to 2012
I have 64-bit hardware (Intel Core-i7) running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional. Will any NI software products and third-party add-ons currently support my configuration? Should I install 64-bit LabVIEW or take the performance hit and install 32-bit LabVIEW and 32-bit drivers? It's Spring of 2012 already, so why it the article refering to 2009 version of LabVIEW?

PCMCIA support
I have 2 PCMCIA devices 6036 and GPIB neither of which seems to have drivers for win7(64bit) are there any plans to add support for these devices? if not they are rather expensive decorations ! regards nick :)
