The R&D Staff Tip of the Month allows the software developers and quality assurance staff at National Instruments Electronics Workbench Group to showcase the features of NI Multisim that they know will be helpful to the design engineer.

1. R&D Staff Tip of the Month

A really helpful tool in NI Multisim is the ability to save variables from a simulation result other than those that have been specifically selected for analysis. This saved simulation data can be used later in the analysis process to build expressions, or add extra traces to the Grapher View.  This means that I am not restricted to only specific nodes that were selected in the analysis set-up, but all nodes that make sense in my analysis of a design.

2. See For Yourself

Saving variables is supported for the following analyses: AC, Transient, Distortion, DC Sweep, Parameter and Temperature Sweep. 

  1. To open an AC analysis, select Simulate >> Analyses >> AC Analysis…
  2. In the AC Analysis dialog box select the Output tab.
  3. After selecting the specific variables (or nodes) for analysis click on the Select variables to save button to view the Select variables to save dialog box.

In this dialog box the appropriate variables can be saved in the background of each analysis. So for example;

  1. Click on the Voltages drop down box.
  2. Select the All option to save all voltages, at all nodes of the design.
  3. Click on the OK button.

After a simulation is now run (to do this I hit the Simulate button), the additional saved voltage values can be added to the simulation data already viewed in the Grapher View.

  1. After a simulation, select Tools >> Add trace(s) from latest simulation result in the Grapher.
  2. In the Add trace(s) from latest simulation result dialog box (shown in Figure 1) the various saved nodal voltages can be selected.
  3. Click on the node of interest in the Variables scroll box.
  4. Click on the Add button.
  5. Click on the Calculate button to view the data in the Grapher.
