Modulation Toolkit for LabVIEW

The National Instruments Modulation Toolkit for LabVIEW extends the NI LabVIEW graphical development environment with functions and tools for signal generation, analysis, visualization, and processing of standard and custom digital and analog modulation formats.

With this toolkit, you can rapidly develop custom applications for research, design, characterization, validation, and test of communications systems and components that modulate or demodulate signals. Applications for the NI Modulation Toolkit are numerous; they include digital modulation formats (AM, FM, PM, ASK, FSK, MSK, GMSK, PSK, QPSK, PAM, and QAM) that are the foundation of many digital communication standards found in 802.11a/b/g/n, ZigBee (802.15.4), WiMax (802.16), RFID, satellite communications, and commercial broadcast among others.

Description

This toolkit is radically different from alternatives such as box-based instruments, which help you make specific measurements well but are not amenable to customization. The Modulation Toolkit also differs from software tools for pure simulation that fall short when you want to integrate custom hardware-specific tasks.

The Modulation Toolkit contains VIs that you can use with National Instruments hardware or in a simulation environment to encode data and generate and analyze analog and digital modulated signals. The toolkit, which supports modulation formats including FSK, MSK, PSK, QAM, AM, FM, and PM, is capable of IF to I-Q conversion, I-Q visualization, and the addition of common signal impairments. It is also capable of upconversion and downconversion, decoding, demodulation, and filtering the signal.

Other VIs help you evaluate how well the transmitted signal was received. Metrics you can use for this purpose include measure signal impairments, bit error rate, burst timing, phase noise, carrier frequency drift, modulation index, and complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) values of signals generated by a unit under test.

Because this toolkit is part of the LabVIEW platform, it also adds the capability of displaying these measurements through 3D eye diagrams, 2D eye diagrams, constellation plots, trellis diagrams, and XY graphs on a user interface.

For RF applications, the Modulation Toolkit complements the National Instruments PXI-5660 RF vector signal analyzer and the PXI-5670 RF vector signal generator. For lower-frequency operation (baseband or IF signals), the Modulation Toolkit works with the 100 MHz mixed-signal test platform with digitizer, analog waveform generator, and digital waveform I/O products.
