VXI/VME/PXI Controller RAM

Select the Controller model from the list below for more information:

VXIpc-870 Series RAM
The VXIpc 870 Series uses 144 pin 100 MHz SDRAM and supports 16, 32, and 64 MB SO-DIMM for a total of 192 MB maximum. As DRAM technology improves, the maximum amount of RAM supported may increase.

To add RAM to the VXIpc 870 Series, do the following:

  1. Remove the unit from the VXI mainframe.
  2. Remove the screws that hold the cover in place and remove the cover.
  3. Add SO-DIMM modules to the empty SO-DIMM sockets.

National Instruments recommends the following types of SO-DIMMs for use with the VXIpc 870 Series controller (SDRAM):

    32 MB: 4 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—10 ns, 1.05 in. max

    64 MB: 8 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—10 ns, 1.05 in. max.

    128 MB: 16 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—10 ns, 1.05 in. max.

Note: National Instruments has tested and verified that the SO-DIMMs we sell work with the VXIpc 870 Series. We recommend you purchase your SO-DIMM modules from National Instruments. Other off-the-shelf SO-DIMM modules are not guaranteed to work properly.

VXIpc-850, VXIpc-860, VXIpc-700 Series RAM
To add RAM to the VXIpc 800/700, remove the top cover and add SIMM modules to the empty SIMM sockets. National Instruments recommends the following types of SIMMs for use with the VXIpc-850 and VXIpc 700 Series controllers (Fast Page Mode):

    8 MB: 2 MB x 36 SIMMs — 70 ns

    16 MB: 4 MB x 36 SIMMs — 70 ns

    32 MB: 8 MB x 36 SIMMs — 70 ns

The VXIpc-860 can use Fast Page Mode (FPM), Extended Data Out (EDO), or Bursts Extended Data Out (BEDO). National Instruments recommends the following types of SIMMs for use with the VXIpc-860:

    8 MB: 2 MB x 32/36 SIMMs — 60 or 70 ns

    16 MB: 4 MB x 32/36 SIMMs — 60 or 70 ns

    32 MB: 8 MB x 32/36 SIMMs — 60 or 70 ns

    64 MB: 16 MB x 32/36 SIMMs — 60 or 70 ns

The height of SIMMs used with VXIpc 800 Series controllers should be 0.85 in. or less, or 1.2 in. for VXIpc 700 Series controllers.

Note: The VXIpc-800 must be populated with pairs of SIMMs because the DRAM interface is 64 bits wide.

VXI/VMEpc 600 Series RAM
To add RAM to the VXI/VMEpc 600 Series, remove the unit from the VXI/VME mainframe and add SO-DIMM modules to the empty SO-DIMM sockets. National Instruments recommends the following types of SO-DIMMs for use with the VXI/VMEpc 600 Series controllers (EDO):

    16 MB: 2 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—60 ns

    32 MB: 4 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—60 ns

    64 MB: 8 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—60 ns

Note: National Instruments has tested and verified that the EDO SO-DIMMs we sell work with the VXI/VMEpc 600 Series. We recommend you purchase your SO-DIMM modules from National Instruments. Other off-the-shelf SO-DIMM modules are not guaranteed to work properly.

PXI-8150 Series RAM
To add RAM to the PXI-8150 Series, remove the unit from the PXI mainframe and add SO-DIMM modules to the empty SO-DIMM sockets. National Instruments recommends the following types of SO-DIMMs for use with the PXI-8150 Series controller (EDO):

    16 MB: 2 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—60 ns

    32 MB: 4 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—60 ns

    64 MB: 8 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—60 ns

Note: National Instruments has tested and verified that the EDO SO-DIMMs we sell work with the PXI-8150 Series. We recommend you purchase your SO-DIMM modules from National Instruments. Other off-the-shelf SO-DIMM modules are not guaranteed to work properly.

PXI-8150B Series RAM
To add RAM to the PXI-8150B Series, remove the unit from the PXI mainframe and add SO-DIMM modules to the empty SO-DIMM sockets. National Instruments recommends the following types of SO-DIMMs for use with the PXI-8150B Series controller (SDRAM):

    32 MB: 4 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—10 ns, 1.05 in. max.

    64 MB: 8 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—10 ns, 1.05 in. max.

    128 MB: 16 MB x 64 SO-DIMMs—10 ns, 1.05 in. max.

Note: National Instruments has tested and verified that the SO-DIMMs we sell work with the PXI-8150B Series. We recommend you purchase your SO-DIMM modules from National Instruments. Other off-the-shelf SO-DIMM modules are not guaranteed to work properly.

PCI-MXI-2 RAM
The PCI-MXI-2 can accommodate one DRAM SIMM. You can use 32-bit or 36-bit SIMMS since DRAM parity is not required. The PCI-MXI-2 can hold up to 16 MB of onboard memory. The PCI-MXI-2 supports DRAM speeds of 80 ns or faster.

DRAM SIMMS supported by PCI-MXI-2:

    1 MB: 256K x 32 or 256K x 36, 80ns or faster

    4 MB: 1M x 32 or 1M x 36, 80ns or faster

    16 MB: 4M x 32 or 4M x 36, 80ns or faster

VXI/VME MXI-2 RAM
The VXI/VME-MXI-2 and can accommodate up to two 1.35 in. DRAM SIMMs. You can use 32-bit or 36-bit SIMMS since DRAM parity is not required. Because the VXI/VME-MXI-2 supports only one organization at a time, all SIMMs installed must be of the same type. Use Bank 0 first when installing the SIMMs. This allows you to install up to 64 MB. The VXI/VME-MXI-2 supports DRAM speeds of 80 ns or faster.

Switch S6 is used to select the size of each SIMM on the VXI-MXI-2. Switch S2 is used on the VME-MXI-2. If the SIMMs are 4 M x 32 or larger, S6/S2 should be in the OFF setting (pin hole visible). For SIMMs smaller than 4 M x 32, use the ON setting. Refer to either the VXI-MXI-2 User Manual or the VME-MXI-2 User Manual for more information on switch S6/S2.
