Installing PCI-232/485 Boards under Windows 98/95
Before installing the hardware, complete the following steps to install the NI Serial software for Windows98/95. Installing the NI Serial Software.
Note: If you are installing a PCI RS-485 you may need to adjust the value of the bias resistors, depending on your application. More information.
Follow these steps to install a PCI serial board:
- Turn off your computer. Keep the computer plugged in so that it remains grounded while you install the PCI serial board.
- Remove the top or side cover of the computer.
- Remove the expansion slot cover on the back of the computer.
- Insert the PCI serial board into an unused slot with the serial connectors sticking out of the opening on the back panel. Make sure that you insert the board all the way into the slot. The board may seem to click firmly into place, even though it is only part of the way in. The figure below shows the installation of a PCI serial board:

- Screw the mounting bracket of the PCI serial board to the back panel rail of the computer.
- Replace the cover, and turn on your computer.
- Watch for Windows 98 or 95 to display one or more New Hardware Found dialog boxes. In the dialog box, select Windows Default Driver and click on OK. If no New Hardware Found dialog box appears, follow the steps to force Windows 98 or 95 to detect serial Hardware.
Your serial hardware is now installed.
