What is a Web-based Installer and Why Would I Want to Use One?

Overview

This document describes how to download and install NI software using NI web-based installers. A web-based installer is a small piece of software you can use to select and download products from ni.com. Use the web-based installer to select products from a suite of products, instead of downloading all products in that suite, saving you time and bandwidth. You can also download and save an installer for later installation. Because a web-based installer uses different technology than other installers from NI, refer to the following information about its use.

1. Using Web-based Installers

Complete the following steps to use a web-based installer:

  1. Ensure your Internet connection is working. You need Internet connectivity to download the selected products or to install a product you have not previously downloaded.
  2. Download a web-based installer from ni.com/downloads.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation process.
  4. Select a directory to store the downloaded files. This directory is where the compressed downloaded files will be extracted.
  5. Click Start.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select one of the following options:
    • Select I want to install software now to download and immediately install the products you select.
    • Select I want to download software only to download the software for later installation. This option is useful when you want to install the software at a later time on this or another computer, but may not have Internet connectivity at that time.
  8. Click Next and follow the remaining prompts to download and install the selected products.

Notes:

  • Once all of the selected products in a suite are fully downloaded, the suite will no longer prompt for downloading and will no longer require Internet connectivity to install the products.
  • To copy a fully or partially downloaded suite to another computer, navigate to the download location you selected in the web-based installer and copy all of the subdirectories to the new location. Run Installer\setup.exe to launch the installer.

2. Preinstalling Required Software

Most NI products require some Microsoft software products as prerequisite system components. Some NI installers do not include these Microsoft products, so they will not be automatically installed for you.

Web-based installers act the same way. You need to follow the instructions in the start up installation wizard to install the required Microsoft software on your system.

If you receive an alert when you run an NI installer that the product requires Microsoft software to first be installed, visit ni.com/info and enter the appropriate Info Code to download the necessary Microsoft installer. Install the Microsoft product before installing NI software.
