What's New in LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC)
Distributed System Manager
A single unified tool to monitor and interact with NI targets outside of LabVIEW. With this tool, users can view real-time trends and alarms on shared variables and also tags in OPC and Modbus items without any programming.
Shared Variable Node
With the new shared variable primitive in LabVIEW DSC Module 8.6, you can drop hundreds of shared variables nodes on the block diagram without suffering any slowdown in edit time performance.
Platform DVD and Activation
The platform DVD includes LabVIEW and all its modules and toolkits, making the installation process easy. For the first time LabVIEW DSC is activation-based, helping users to easily evaluate the new features in the latest version.

LabVIEW Shared Variable Integration
National Instruments LabVIEW 8 introduced the new LabVIEW shared variable, a unified API for communicating data among VIs executing on the same local machine or across a network. The NI LabVIEW 8 DSC Module extends the data services portion of the LabVIEW shared variable by adding configuration-based logging, alarming, scaling, and more.

LabVIEW Event Structure Integration
Previously, LabVIEW DSC users had to develop custom polling logic for applications that required programmatic response to alarm conditions or other system events. With LabVIEW 8 DSC, you can register alarms and events as cases in the LabVIEW event structure to quickly implement event-driven applications without any separate polling.

Enhanced System Security
Security is a vital aspect of application development, particularly for distributed applications. LabVIEW 8 DSC features a number of enhanced security features, including domain-based security. Now you can configure unique security settings for individuals and user groups based on log-in domains. Additionally, security settings are network-based, so you can configure security for a single server and distribute those settings to all networked clients.

Modbus TCP and OPC 2.x/3.0 Client and Server Support
The new LabVIEW shared variable makes it easier than ever to integrate applications based on LabVIEW into your existing architecture. The LabVIEW shared variable engine — the feature that manages all of the shared variable communication — is an OPC 2.x and 3.0 client. Additionally, the LabVIEW 8 DSC Module adds OPC 2.x and 3.0 server support and a Modbus TCP I/O server, so you can read and write to OPC- and Modbus TCP-compliant hardware.
