What is IVI?
IVI is one of three different types of LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI instrument drivers that National Instruments provides to meet your needs. Depending on your specific requirements, you can use any of the following types of drivers:
- IVI Drivers
IVI Drivers are sophisticated instrument drivers that feature increased performance and flexibility for your more intricate test applications that require interchangeability, state-caching, or simulation of instruments. To achieve interchangeability, the IVI Foundation has defined specifications for the following thirteen instrument classes: DMM, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform/function generator, DC power supply, switch, power meter, spectrum analyzer, RF signal generator, counter, digitizer, downconverter, upconverter, and AC power supply. Certified IVI drivers are technically supported by National Instruments.
- Plug and Play Instrument Drivers
Plug and Play Instrument Drivers simplify controlling and communicating with your instrument through a standard and simple programming model for all drivers. LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI Plug and Play instrument drivers comply with requirements and recommendations for programming style, error handling, front panels, block diagrams, icons, and online help. Because Plug and Play drivers maintain a common architecture and interface, you quickly and easily connect to and communicate with your instruments with very little or no code development. Certified Plug and Play instrument drivers are technically supported by National Instruments, while Plug and Play instrument drivers are supported by instrument vendors or other third parties.
- Contributed Instrument Drivers
Contributed Instrument Drivers are included “as is” and typically solve a specific application rather than acting as a fully functional instrument driver. Contributed instrument drivers are not supported by National Instruments or other third parties.
