Configure Your NI CompactRIO System for First Use

In this section, learn how to configure the network settings of your CompactRIO controller. Before beginning this process, you should have the proper software installed on your computer and your CompactRIO system should be assembled, powered, and connected to a network or your development computer.

  1. Ensure that all DIP switches on your CompactRIO controller are in the OFF position.

Depending on your CompactRIO controller model, you will either see one of the two switch configurations shown in the CompactRIO manual excerpts below or your controller will not have physical DIP switches. For DIP switches that toggle from left to right, move the switch to the side labeled OFF.

For DIP switches that toggle up and down on a rocker, press down on the side labeled OFF.

If you made any changes to the DIP switch positions, reset by pressing the RESET button on the controller for the settings to take effect.

  2. Disable secondary network interfaces, such as the wireless access card on a laptop.

For initial setup, National Instruments software searches for your CompactRIO system through the primary network interface on your computer. Disabling all additional network interfaces ensures that your CompactRIO system is easy to find on the network.

  3. Open Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)

All Programs » National Instruments » Measurement & Automation

    1. Expand Remote Systems

    1. You should see your CompactRIO system under Remote Systems. Select it to view the network settings and then choose the appropriate option below.
      1. I do not see my CompactRIO system under Remote Systems
      2. I see my controller with an automatically assigned IP address (not 0.0.0.0)

      1. I see an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and my CompactRIO system is connected to a network that automatically assigns IP addresses (has a DHCP server)

      1. I see an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and my CompactRIO system is connected directly to my computer with a crossover cable or to a switch without a DHCP server
