Choosing What Software to Install

To help you decide which software to install, refer to the following descriptions:

NI-RFSA 15.6.0—This software installation provides support for customers using NI RF vector signal analyzers or the RF input subsystem of vector signal transceivers (VSTs). To program the NI RF vector signal analyzer or NI RF VST, use the NI-RFSA API. The getting started guide for your device provides information about how to install, configure, test, and begin using an NI RF vector signal analyzer or vector signal transceiver.

NI-RFSG 15.0.3—This software installation provides support for customers using NI RF signal generators or the RF output subsystem of vector signal transceivers (VSTs). To program the NI RF signal generator or NI RF VST, use the NI-RFSG API. The getting started guide for your device provides information about how to install, configure, test, and begin using an NI RF signal generator or vector signal transceiver.

NI LabVIEW 2015 Instrument Design Libraries for Vector Signal Transceivers 15.0—This software installation provides support for customers who want to program the FPGA on NI RF VSTs using LabVIEW 2015. To program the FPGA on the VST, use the instrument design libraries and the LabVIEW 2015 FPGA Module. The getting started guide for your device provides information about how to install, configure, test, and begin using an NI RF vector signal transceiver.

NI LabVIEW 2015 Instrument Design Libraries for IF Digitizers 15.0—This software installation provides support for customers who want to program the FPGA on the NI PXIe-5624R (NI 5624R) IF digitizer using LabVIEW 2015. To program the FPGA on the NI 5624R, use the instrument design libraries and the LabVIEW 2015 FPGA Module. The getting started guide for your device provides information about how to install, configure, test, and begin using an NI 5624R IF digitizer.

NI-RFmx SpecAn 2.1—This software installation provides support for NI-RFmx Spectral Analyzers Measurement functions in LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C, and .NET environments.

NI-RFmx Demod 2.1—This software installation provides support for NI-RFmx Demodulation functions in LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C, and .NET environments.

Modulation Toolkit for LabVIEW—This software installation provides additional modulation scheme software functionality for customers using NI RF vector signal generators, NI arbitrary waveform generators, NI RF vector signal analyzers, and NI high-speed digitizers.

Spectral Measurements Toolkit (LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI)—This software installation provides additional spectral measurement software functionality for customers using NI RF vector signal analyzers and NI high-speed digitizers.

Installation Instructions

Caution  Before you install NI-RFmx products, ensure that you have uninstalled all related NI-RFmx 1.0 products. Refer to your product-specific readme file for more information about product-specific uninstallation instructions.

System Requirements

This installation requires one of the following Microsoft operating systems:

  • Windows 10 (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • Windows 8.1 (32-bit or 64-bit)*
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)

* For VST devices, LabVIEW FPGA compilation tools cannot run on a machine running Windows 8.1. Refer to Cannot Compile FPGA VIs on a Windows 8 Computer for more information.

This installation requires that version 3.1 of the MSI (Windows Installer) Engine is installed on your computer. If you do not have MSI 3.1 or later, the installer updates the engine automatically and may require you to restart your computer.

Refer to your product-specific readme file for additional requirements.

Uninstallation Instructions

You can uninstall each NI RF device driver by selecting National Instruments Software in the Windows Add/Remove Programs application. Refer to your product-specific readme file for more information about product-specific uninstallation instructions.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.

For more information about automating the installation of NI products, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:

Using NI Software with Microsoft Windows 10

Microsoft Windows 10 is the latest version of the Windows operating system and features significant changes compared to previous versions. Windows 10 introduces several new capabilities and also combines features from both Windows 7 and Windows 8. For more information about NI support for Windows 10, visit ni.com/windows10.

Using NI Software with Microsoft Windows 8.1

When you install National Instruments software on Microsoft Windows 8.x, you will notice a few additional tiles in the Apps view, including shortcuts to NI application software products such as NI LabVIEW, Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX), and NI Launcher.

Using NI Launcher

NI Launcher helps you find and launch installed NI products. It provides you with a method of finding NI products similar to the Start menu in previous versions of Microsoft Windows. To use NI Launcher, click the NI Launcher tile in the Apps view. NI Launcher launches the desktop and opens a menu containing a list of NI products. Click any NI product to launch it.

Note  NI MAX does not appear as a desktop shortcut when installed on Microsoft Windows 8.1. You can launch NI MAX either from the Apps view or from within NI Launcher.

Pinning Frequently Used Applications

For convenience, you can pin your most-used NI applications, such as MAX, to either the Start screen or the Taskbar on the desktop, as necessary.

Current ApplicationIcon LocationPin to Action

Windows 8.1 Desktop Start screenRight-click application and select Pin to Start
Windows 8.1 Start screenDesktop TaskbarRight-click application and select Pin to taskbar from the menu bar on the bottom of the screen

Finding All Programs

If you want to find a particular application or related files, such as documentation files, from the Start screen, you can access all installed files from the Apps view.

Installation Instructions

  1. Download and Extract RFDRVSUITE052016.zip to a temporary location.
  2. Launch setup.exe

To conserve disk space you can delete the downloaded .zip file, however it is recommended that you keep the extracted installation files in case you need to add features from the NI-RFSA distribution in the future, or plan to create your own installers using National Instruments development environments.
