SMEs and Startups

Innovative SMEs and startups are key contributors to the socioeconomic development of emerging countries because they generate new and high-value jobs and social value. However, a dynamic entrepreneurial sector depends on many factors including financial support, market expertise, and access to cutting-edge technology—these are especially true at the nascent stage. The Planet NI program helps entrepreneurs in established small businesses and startups increase their access to world-class development tools, technical training, and technology-based markets and can become eligible to receive:

a. Subsidized price for first time ownership on select software and hardware products

b. Access to loaned high end equipment

c. Free online technical support

d. Pro bono technical mentorship, consulting and guidance

e. Grants to training courses, self-paced materials and certification exams

f. Referrals to local industry, business opportunities and NI’s global network of partners and customers

SMEs make up more than two-thirds of the local economy in many emerging countries; their success contributes greatly to sustainable economic development. The Planet NI program has helped more than 500 SMEs in countries such as India, Malaysia, Turkey, Lebanon, Mexico, and the Philippines thrive since the program’s inception in 2011. Companies currently active in the program are developing products for rural villages, designing specialized machines for local industries, and building novel energy-efficiency systems.

"There is an old saying: If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. That’s what Planet NI embodies for us. What Planet NI did for us, we want to do for the country—we want to empower people in rural areas through renewable technology tools. Planet NI program team members helped us complete a project with a significant social impact in rural India by making their products accessible and helping us ultimately be successful."
